The Hot Pastrami at Lou’s Sandwiches Cafe
Lou’s is synonymous with value in the Richmond. This unassuming cafe does a steady stream of business all day due to its track record of making delicious sandwiches on fresh bread with generous fillings. Our favorite is the hot pastrami, with the CBR coming in a close second (that’s the chicken breast, bacon and ranch). The hot pastrami comes on Dutch crunch bread. For those who like a little spice, Lou’s offers a jalapeño spread to kick up the flavor a notch. Or, if you prefer to play it safe, order the Lou’s Special Sauce: an aioli-based spread with garlic and herbs.

The World Famous Turkey Sub at Arguello Market
Let’s talk turkey. Specifically the “World Famous” Turkey Sub at Arguello Market on Arguello Boulevard. This has been a firm favorite in our house since we moved to the neighborhood. It’s also a popular spot for people grabbing a picnic lunch before heading into the park. The sandwich is crafted with rotisserie turkeys prepared on-site; no processed cold cuts here. The juicy turkey is reminiscent of Thanksgiving Day dinner on Dutch crunch bread. You can even add cranberry sauce for the full effect. The “world-famous” claim originated from the owner’s desire for a signature, high-quality item that would grow in acclaim. Over time the sandwich’s popularity surged, and it garnered mentions in travel guides and food blogs alike.

Bánh Mì at Phi Long Sandwich
Phi Long has quickly become my favorite spot for bánh mì in the Richmond. Located on Geary and 10th Avenue, it is a quick stop when I’m out running errands or coming back from a work session at a neighborhood coffee shop. This cafe is a one-woman show with a friendly, multitasking proprietor who does it all. The baguettes are light, fresh, and crispy, and the marinated meats are tender and juicy. The meat portions are also more generous than those at other bánh mì spots. I’ve been back enough times to vouch for the consistency in freshness and flavor. My personal favorite is the Bánh Mì Gà (chicken sandwich) for $8.50. Phi Long offers combo deals where you get a large drink with your sandwich. You can choose from various milk teas (with or without boba), juices, sodas, or coffees. A cash discount is offered, making a bánh mì and drink combo just $12.

AK’s Decadence at AK Meats
AK Meats on Clement and 25th Ave is a champion of pastrami. Many people who try their hot pastrami sandwich say it’s the best they’ve ever had. AK Meats has an old-school butcher shop vibe with very friendly service. They have a full deli as well as some Italian pantry goods. We were lucky to visit last Thursday on a beautiful sunny day, so we ate our sandwiches at the outdoor seating area. The AK’s Decadence consisted of turkey with Swiss cheese served hot with avocados, sprouts, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, and red onions. Again, the Dutch crunch bread is a must.

For me, it’s impossible to pick a favorite amongst these shops. Richmond’s sandwich game is strong. Whatever you’re in the mood for, these neighborhood gems are guaranteed to hit the spot.
